Case Studies

Here are some examples of how Executive Function Coaching and Academic Tutoring have helped our clients.

Organizational coaching for a  young adult with well-treated ADHD

T. was 25 and had good improvements in his attentional stamina and focus after starting a stimulant medicine. But he still had difficulty with organizing his time, his projects, and his living space. He had never acquired the systems and skills for planning because of his untreated ADHD. After several months of working with an Executive Function coach, he had implemented several systems for managing his time, his workflows at his job, and obligations in his life. He continues to work with one of our coaches as his responsibilities grow and as his life becomes more rich and complex with each milestone achieved.

Organizational coaching for a young adult with well-treated depression and anxiety

S. was 27 and struggling to execute the behavioral activation components of her work in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She had a good working relationship with her therapist and her psychiatrist, but would often fail to initiate the plans she made in treatment. After some discussion with her providers, it became apparent that she was motivated but disorganized, with weak time management and planning skills. She worked on these skills with one of our coaches for 6 months, made good progress, and then “graduated” when she felt these skills and systems had become more sustainable in her daily life.

Writing coaching for a high school student with well-treated ADHD and anxiety

J. had a good working relationship with her psychiatrist and therapist, but had trouble implementing learned coping strategies when it came to writing projects due to her Executive Function challenges. Working with a coach, she was able to budget her time more realistically, including giving herself time to practice coping skills while writing. Her coaching program blended frameworks provided by her therapist with an organized and methodical approach to the writing process. Not only did she improve on time and stress management, she also strengthened her writing skills and process. She now feels like a more confident writer as she enters college.

College transition coaching for a student feeling overwhelmed

E. had a positive response to stimulant medication for her ADHD and benefited from the highly structured life of high school. However, when she got to college, she suddenly struggled to manage her time and her obligations. This stark contrast led her to feel demoralized and overwhelmed. Her coach helped her develop better time management and planning, and helped her maintain perspective and hope about her success during this life transition. Through the process of coaching, E. discovered how her attentional strength waxed and waned across the day; she was then able to more effectively organize her schedule around these patterns which also helped with stress management. E. has been very successful in her last 2 years of college and occasionally resumes coaching to check in and adapt her workflows as her courseload changes.
